In the performance art video, Candy, I break open a handmade piñata filled with used vapes. For this piece, I wanted to destroy an object filled with a physical reminder of my bad habits, in this case, smoking. The piñata was made using the traditional method used in Mexico, where my adoptive family is from. The method utilizes flour, water, and salt as a glue to hold together paper as the base structure, and then is decorated with cut paper. Inside the piñata is 4 years’ worth of vapes. In the background, Dale, Dale, Dale, plays, which is a song traditionally sung by family members while people take their turn to hit the piñata.
